“Kailangan namin ng tulong and that’s why we are collaborating closely with associations, CSOs (civil society organizations) who are willing to help us,” ani Magalong.

“They’re getting in touch with us, telling us these are some approaches we need to do, and we’re very open,” dagdag ng alkalde.

“Hindi kami opposition, we are just an advocate, a movement [for good governance],” ani Magalong.

“Who else would be the best leader there kundi yung mayor or local chief executive? I think this movement is very important that’s why we want to also expand, we want also to be known kasi alam ko maraming mga mayors sa maliliit na bayan gusto po nila talaga ang good governance,” ani Babalcon.

“It’s important for us to establish links, to conduct learning sessions, to be equipped so that yung ibibigay naming mga plano na gusto namin mapondohan, maparating namin sa national government. At the same time, the vision of our administration, we will be able to implement it as it should be mula sa ground,” ani Cruz.

MAYORS FOR GOOD GOVERNANCE INVITES GOVT, CSOs TO JOIN ‘UNITED FRONT’ VS CORRUPTION

The Mayors for Good Governance (M4GG), a new cause-oriented movement led by local chief executives, is extending its arms to all concerned groups to join the crusade against corruption and promote an innovative brand of governance.

At the Kapihan sa Manila Hotel Wednesday, M4GG co-convenor and Baguio City Mayor Benjamin “Benjie” Magalong emphasized that the fight against corruption and ensure good governance needs a “collective effort,” thus the need for a “united front.”

“Kailangan namin ng tulong and that’s why we are collaborating closely with associations, CSOs (civil society organizations) who are willing to help us,” Magalong said.

“They’re getting in touch with us, telling us these are some approaches we need to do, and we’re very open,” he added.

The former police general-turned-mayor said M4GG would also be “working closely with the present administration and with all the national agencies of government” to address corruption and lack of transparency and accountability among public officials.

“Hindi kami opposition, we are just an advocate, a movement [for good governance],” Magalong said.

Mayor Eunice Babalcon of Paranas, Samar, an M4GG member, said local governments should be “at the forefront” of the crusade for good governance.

“Who else would be the best leader there kundi yung mayor or local chief executives? I think this movement is very important that’s why we want to also expand, we want also to be known kasi alam ko maraming mga mayors sa maliliit na bayan na gusto nila talaga ang good governance,” Babalcon said.

For first-term Mayor Agatha Cruz of Guiguinto, Bulacan, a movement like M4GG allows local officials to raise concerns about implementing government programs.

“It’s important for us to establish links, to conduct learning sessions, to be equipped so that yung ibibigay naming mga plano na gusto namin mapondohan, maparating namin sa national government. At the same time, the vision of our administration, we will be able to implement it as it should be mula sa ground,” Cruz said.

Since its launch last August, M4GG has garnered support and commitment from 157 mayors from around the Philippines who vowed to advance anti-corruption initiatives and ensure transparency, accountability, and innovation in governance.

M4GG is being led by seven convenors, including Magalong, Quezon City Mayor Joy Belmonte, Mayor Sitti Djalia Hataman of Isabela City, Basilan, Dumaguete City Mayor Felipe Remollo, Marikina City Mayor Marcy Teodoro, Pasig City Mayor Vico Sotto, and Mayor Rommel Arnado of Kauswagan, Lanao del Norte.
